Liturgical Ministries

All liturgical ministers exist for the service of the Body of Christ, the People of God, the assembly gathered in God’s name. Although serving in any of these ministries should be a source of joy and satisfaction for individual people, these ministries exist for the benefit and service of the Church and not for individual or personal piety, spiritual growth, or status. As such, these ministries are regulated by Church and Liturgical law and are submitted to the authority of the Bishop and the local Pastor (USCCB).

Altar Servers

Being an altar server requires both a willingness to serve our parish and a sense of dedication. A primary goal of being an altar server is to help you grow in your faith and understanding of service to the Our Lady of Angels community. It also calls for an understanding of personal responsibility as others are depending upon your assistance at our Liturgical Celebrations. We hope the experience will help you grow closer to God as you come to know how important your help is to others.

At present, we invite parish young people who are baptized Catholics that have celebrated First Eucharist in grades 5 through high school, to be part of the Altar Server Ministry. Servers will be trained for Sunday and Holy Day Masses and may also serve at weddings and funerals. There will be periodic meetings or additional training sessions during the year.

Lectors

Lectors prepare for and read the Liturgy of the Word to the parish congregation at pre-assigned Saturday evening and Sunday Masses.

Lectors serve at the discretion of the Pastor.

Our annual training meeting for new and returning lectors is in November. If you are interested in learning more about the selection and training process, we welcome you to contact Margaret Railton.  

Extraordinary Ministers

Extraordinary Ministers distribute the Holy Eucharist to the assembled OLA Community at Mass, at home, in hospitals and in rest homes.  Extraordinary Ministers are commissioned each year in June.  They serve at the discretion of the Pastor. Extraordinary Ministers are expected to complete a MANDATORY CLASS.  Failure to attend means you will not be able to .continue providing this ministry.  If you are interested in finding out more about the selection and training process, please feel free to contact Carole Nickolai

Homebound Eucharistic Ministers

Our Lady of Angels’ Homebound Extraordinary Ministers help care for our parish members who for reasons of health or infirmity cannot be with us as we gather for worship.  Our ministers bring the Eucharist, as well as news of parish events and a friendly face to the sick, elderly and homebound.

If you have a Catholic, homebound family member who has a prolonged illness, please let the parish know so that the ministers can visit and bring the Eucharist to those in need. Please contact the rectory at (650) 347-7768.

Hospital Eucharistic Ministers

Hospital Eucharistic Ministers assist in the distribution of the Eucharist to the sick.

Volunteer Opportunities

Extraordinary Ministers are active, adult Catholics who wish to serve their fellow parishioners and have a love of the Eucharist.  Extraordinary Ministers are ordinary Christians who model Christian living in faith and conduct in their ministry and in their daily lives. Volunteers are needed.  Please contact Pat Stecher if you are interested.

Music Ministry

The OLA Parish choir is a group of dedicated singers and instrumentalists who lead the Music at the 10:00 am Mass. Their repertoire consists of a mix of traditional to contemporary liturgical music that is presented in a way to encourage assembly participation.

No experience is necessary to sing in the Parish Choir. You don’t even have to read music! Click on the “Join the Choir” picture below to send director, Matt Mattei, an email expressing your interest. If you’re an instrumentalist, drop us a line by and let us know what your skills are.

The OLA parish choir rehearses at 7:00 pm on Tuesday nights in the church and sings on Sunday at the 10:00 am Mass during the year. The choir alternates with the Children’s Choir during the school year.

  • MATTHEW MATTEI

Matt has been Director of Music Ministry at OLA since 2005, and has been a teacher at OLA school since 2000. Matt began his ministry at St Patrick’s Church in Angels Camp in 1983 when he played the organ at the 7:30pm Mass on Saturday nights and upon moving back to the Bay Area in 1987, continued ministering at St Charles Church in San Carlos and then moving on to St Matthias Church in Redwood City where he was Director of Music from 1990-2004.

At OLA parish, Matt conducts the Parish Choir, and accompanies the Cantor at the 5:00, 8:30 and 11:30 Mass. He oversees all aspects of Music Ministry at OLA and prepares the projections for Mass on the weekends.

Children's Liturgy

Bringing the Good News to Life!

We welcome children to the OLA Children’s Liturgy at every 10:00am Sunday Mass, except during the summer and select holidays. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we bring God and Jesus’ Good News to life for our children by celebrating the weekly scripture in an engaging, interactive manner relevant to them.

Who can attend?

All children, parishioners and visitors 3 years old and above are welcome! We offer two gatherings, one for Pre-K & Kindergarten children and one for First through Sixth Graders.

What will the children learn?

In a nurturing, sweet environment, the volunteer teacher (along with any parents interested in joining) teaches our youngest students about God’s loving ways, shares prayers and relays the Sunday gospel theme, appropriate for their understanding. This special children’s time also provides parents quiet time in church to listen and reflect on Sunday’s scripture and homily.

1st – 6th Grade Sunday School

We use engaging approaches including: videos, color illustrations, plays, art projects, games, books, maps, posters, and many creative internet sources such as: catholicmoms.com, catholicicing.com,  faithfirst.com, usccb.org, and pflaumweeklies.com.

Our goal is to have the children participate in reading, discussing and internalizing weekly scripture and Catholic Doctrine in order to inspire them to carry the message forward into their daily lives.

When do the children rejoin us?

Following our lessons, we lead children back into the church to sit before the front pews during the consecration. After holding hands and praying the “Our Father”, children rejoin their parents in the pews.

How can parents help?

We are always looking for new Pre-K – 6th grade Sunday teachers and helpers! Your teaching opportunity is typically one Sunday 10:00am Mass per month. Little advance prep is needed for Pre-K & K. 1 – 6th grade teachers, with as much guidance as desired, will create a lesson plan and help set up and clean up the Children’s Liturgy room. The teaching rewards are heavenly…and teachers also receive school service hours.

Filipino Charismatics

Welcome to the OLA Filipino Ministries

Our Lady of Angels Multicultural Group (OMG): A ministry welcoming new and regular parishioners to get involved in different ministries at Our Lady of Angels, Burlingame.

  • Grade Mass:  Every Sunday, adult volunteers and Mass coordinators are needed for the 6pm Mass. Please arrive at 5:30pm to receive instructions for your role.
  • Movie Night for All Ages: OLA Family Movie admission is free and is hosted once a month at 6pm after the 5pm Mass. Each movie night event is hosted by a different organization in our parish. Food is provided and fellowship follows. The movie location is in the Parish Lower Hall.

    Eucharistic Ministers: To serve during the 6pm Mass of the first, third, fourth and fifth Sundays of each month. (appropriate training will be undertaken for the first timers).

    Lectors and/or Readers: To serve during the 6pm Mass of the first, third, fourth and fifth Sundays of each month.  Training will be provided for new lectors and/or readers.

    Filipino Choir: We’d like to invite you to sing during the 6pm Mass every first and third Sundays of each month. Join a group of young Fil-Ams singing praise and worship songs. Singers and instrumentalists are welcome.

    Spiritual Events: Celebrate Faith Traditions

    First Friday Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
  • Date and Location: Every First Friday of the month in the Lower Hall at 8:30pm.
  • Description: A special Mass celebrated in honor of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Priestly blessing for the monthly birthday and anniversary celebrants, novena prayer, charismatic praise and worship music. The Mass ends with a potluck dinner. (Christmas Party during the first Friday of December).

Our Lady of Manaoag Anniversary Mass

  • Date and Location: Every First Sunday of March at 6pm.
  • Description: A special Mass celebrating the Anniversary of Our Lady of Manaoag. Recitation of the Rosary and procession up to the hall of Saints where the statue of our Lady is enshrined. Marian and Filipino music during the Mass.

Annual Obando Feast (More info)

  • Date and Location: Every third Saturday of May.  Mass starts at 11am in the morning followed by the traditional dance procession from the church to the gymnasium for lunch, entertainment, and a fun-filled program.
  • Description: Feasts are a huge part of parish life in the Philippines. Still, in Obando, a town on Manila Bay, one church’s feast is famous for an unusual element, a fertility dance that serves as a form of prayer for couples who are hoping to conceive a child. A special Mass in honor of the three saints, St Clare of Assisi, St. Paschal Baylon, and Nuestra Senora de Salambao and fertility dance.

Annual Santo Nino de Cebu Fiesta

  • Date and Location: Every third Sunday of January at the 6pm Mass. There will be a procession to the Hall of Saints where the statue is enshrined, and a reception will follow at the Parish Lower Hall.
  • Description: For centuries, Filipino Catholics have a strong devotion to the Santo Nino, or in English, known as “The Child Jesus.” One of the oldest relics in the Philippines, the Santo Nino is widely believed to be miraculous. The image of this Child is found in many houses, establishments, businesses, and transportation throughout the Philippines. And here’s a fun fact: the Santo Nino is also often dressed in miniature costumes that often reflect the profession of its devotees such as doctors, nurses, policemen, and teachers. The statue was originally a gift from the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon of Cebu and his chief consort during their baptism back in 1521. The Santo Nino stands approximately 12 inches tall, that is made of wood and carved as a Flemish-style. It depicts Jesus Christ as a child, with an amiable face, and dressed as a Spanish monarch. The statue is adorned in imperial regalia, which include a golden crown, a globus cruciger, as well as a scepter made of gold. The fine vestments were mostly offered by devotees for centuries. The image was made out of St. Theresa of Avila’s vision of the Child Jesus during the 16th century.

Last January 13th, OLA celebrated the Feast of the Santo Nino at the 6 p.m. Mass.  Filipino Catholics around the Bay Area came in to celebrate as well as its devotees. The much awaited event, celebrated its 2nd year at OLA. The devotion to the Santo Niño is common with worldwide veneration of the Infant Jesus of Prague in the Czech Republic, while the Spanish or Latin American version is called the Santo Nino de Antocha.

The Santo Nino is replicated in many parts of the Philippines, along with different titles bearing its name. This is one of the most beloved and recognizable Filipino cultural icon. Its feast day usually falls on the 3rd Sunday of January, which includes a much celebrated annual dancing festival called the “Sinulog.” Today, the original Santo Nino image is permanently displayed on a bulletproof glass inside the chapel of the Basilica del Santo Nino in Cebu City.

Simbang Gabi (A Novena of Advent Masses)

  • Date and Location: Mass starts from December 15th – December 23rd at 7pm. First day celebrated by the Archbishop or Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and music by different choirs in the deanery. Reception follows only during the first day.
  • Description: 9-day Special concelebrated Masses celebrated by various churches belonging to Deanery 10 (Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Angels, Our Lady of the Pillar, St. Bartholomew, St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Gregory, St. Luke, St. Mark and St. Matthew).
